Midterm: History

Color and Symbols in Native Tribes

Color is extremely important in Native American societies, it could determine your rank in the tribe as well as any ability to hunt. Many colors had different meanings according to the tribe. Red, yellow, and a blue-black were the favorite smong most tribes.  For some yellow meant either the sun, or intellect and determination. Red is a sacred color among many tribes; it has a few different meanings; blood, life, faith, beauty and happiness are a few examples. Feathers were also a paramount symbol; given only on a special occasion or as a rite of passage among some tribes.
